Local is the New Global
For the past decade I have been told to think globally.
“Study abroad”
“Know the global market”
“Be a player in a global economy”
But recent reflections have made me rethink this direction and focus on the importance of thinking locally. It seems that in this effort to be global players we just might be leaving our local communities behind.
So- I urge you to consider “local” as the new “global.” Rediscover your community, be a tourist in your own hometown, or grant yourself a ‘staycation.’ Learn what it means to truly capture a niche local market where you do business and become a player in reviving or evolving your local economies.
My own endeavors in trying to live well have shown me the importance of local foods, while my profession opens my eyes to the importance of improving our public school systems on a daily basis. Most recently, I have gotten involved with an incredible group of people working together for a local cause.
Tomorrow night (Thursday, March 24th) my team from Rochester, NY will join over 200 cities around the world in a local-inspired charity event powered by people on Twitter. The appropriately named Twestival (Twitter + Festival) will take place at Rochester’s Easy on East and all proceeds from the event will benefit the YWCA of Rochester and Monroe county.
Visit Rochester Twestival for more information on my local event or the main Twestival site to see the event nearest to you!
Rochester readers can purchase tickets online or at the door! And of course, with an event like this, you can follow along on Twitter at @ROCtwestival and @Twestival.

Ash, what does YWCA stand for?
YWCA is the Young Women’s Christian Association. We are going to be raising money for their emergency overnight stay program for women and children. Our goal is $6,500, which will be enough to accommodate 200 family overnights!
